I meditate on Vishnu — clothed in white, moon-hued, four-armed, with a serene face — for the stilling of all obstacles.

Yasya Dvirada-Vaktraadyaah Paarishadyaah Parah Shatam.Vighnam Nighnanti Satatam Vishwaksenam Tam Aashraye.

I take refuge in Vishwaksena, whose attendants — led by the elephant-faced one — constantly destroy all obstacles.

Vyaasam Vasishtha-Naptaaram Shakteh Pautram Akalmasham.Paraasharaatmajam Vande Shukataatam Taponidhim.

I salute Vyasa — great-grandson of Vasishtha, grandson of Shakti, son of Parashara, father of Shuka, spotless treasury of penance.

Vyaasaaya Vishnu-Roopaaya Vyaasa-Roopaaya Vishnave.Namo Vai Brahma-Nidhaye Vaasishthaaya Namo Namah.

Salutations to Vyasa who is the form of Vishnu, and to Vishnu who is the form of Vyasa — to that treasury of the Vedas, born of Vasishtha's line, again and again I bow.

Avikaaraaya Shuddhaaya Nityaaya Paramaatmane.Sadaika-Roopa-Roopaaya Vishnave Sarva-Jishnave.

To the changeless, the pure, the eternal Supreme Self — ever one in form, the all-conquering Vishnu — salutations.

Yasya Smarana-Maatrena Janma-Samsaara-Bandhanaat.Vimuchyate Namas Tasmai Vishnave Prabhavishnave.

By whose mere remembrance one is freed from the bondage of birth and worldly existence — to that all-powerful Vishnu, salutations.

Vaishampayana said — having heard all the dharmas and every purifying practice in full, Yudhishthira spoke once more to Bhishma, the son of Shantanu.

Yudhishthira asked — Who is the one deity in this world? Who is the one supreme refuge? Praising whom, worshipping whom, do people attain what is auspicious?

Which dharma do you hold to be the highest of all dharmas? By chanting what is a being freed from the bondage of birth and rebirth?

Bhishma replied — the one who rises ever alert and praises with the thousand names the Lord of the universe, God of gods, the endless Supreme Person…

Tam Eva Chaarchayan Nityam Bhaktyaa Purusham Avyayam.Dhyaayan Stuvan Namasyamsh Cha Yajamaanas Tam Eva Cha.

…worshipping that imperishable Person daily with devotion, meditating on him, praising him, bowing to him and offering to him alone —

Anaadi-Nidhanam Vishnum Sarva-Loka-Maheshwaram.Lokaadhyaksham Stuvan Nityam Sarva-Duhkhaatigo Bhavet.

praising daily that Vishnu without beginning or end, the great Lord of all worlds, the overseer of the worlds — such a one passes beyond all sorrow.

Brahmanyam Sarva-Dharmagyam Lokaanaam Keerti-Vardhanam.Lokanaatham Mahad-Bhootam Sarva-Bhoota-Bhavodbhavam.

He is the friend of the Vedas, knower of every dharma, increaser of the glory of the worlds, Lord of the worlds, the great Being, the source from which all beings arise.

Esha Me Sarva-Dharmaanaam Dharmo Adhikatamo Matah.Yad Bhaktyaa Pundareekaaksham Stavair Archen Narah Sadaa.

This I hold to be the highest of all dharmas — that a person should always worship the lotus-eyed Lord with devotion through hymns of praise.

He who is the supreme great radiance, the supreme great austerity, the supreme great Brahman, the supreme final refuge —

the purest of the pure, the most auspicious of all that is auspicious, the deity of all deities, the imperishable father of all beings.

From whom all beings come forth at the dawn of the first age, and into whom they dissolve again at the ending of the age —

O King, hear from me the thousand names of that Vishnu, foremost in the worlds and Lord of the universe — names that destroy sin and fear.

Yaani Naamaani Gaunaani Vikhyaataani Mahaatmanah.Rishibhih Parigeetaani Taani Vakshyaami Bhootaye.

Those names of the great Lord that describe his qualities, that are renowned and have been sung by the sages — these I shall speak, for your welfare.

Rishir Naamnaam Sahasrasya Veda-Vyaaso Mahaamunih.Chhando Anushtup Tathaa Devo Bhagavaan Devakee-Sutah.

The seer of these thousand names is the great sage Veda Vyasa; the metre is Anushtup; the deity is the Lord, the son of Devaki.

Amritaamshoodbhavo Beejam Shaktir Devakee-Nandanah.Trisaamaa Hridayam Tasya Shaanty-Arthe Viniyujyate.

"Amritamshudbhava" is the seed, "Devaki-nandana" is the power, "Trisama" is the heart — this is applied for the sake of peace.

Vishnum Jishnum Mahaavishnum Prabhavishnum Maheshwaram.Aneka-Roopa-Daityaantam Namaami Purushottamam.

I bow to the Supreme Person — Vishnu, the victorious, the great Vishnu, the all-powerful, the great Lord, who ends the demons of many forms.

Ksheerodanvat-Pradeshe Shuchi-Mani-Vilasat-Saikate Mauktikaanaam,Maalaa-Kluptaasanasthah Sphatika-Mani-Nibhair Mauktikair Mandit-Aangah.Shubhrair Abhrair Adabhrair Upari-Virachitair Mukta-Peeyoosha-Varshaih,Aanando Nah Puneeyaad Arinalina-Gadaa-Shankhapaanir Mukundah.

On the shore of the ocean of milk, on sands bright with pure gems, seated on a couch of pearl garlands, his limbs adorned with crystal-clear pearls, canopied by dense white clouds showering nectar — may Mukunda, holding discus, lotus, mace and conch, who is bliss itself, purify us.

Whose feet are the earth, whose navel is the sky, whose breath is the wind, whose eyes are the moon and sun, whose ears are the directions, whose head is heaven, whose mouth is fire, whose abdomen is the ocean; within whom the whole universe rests, wondrously alive with gods, humans, birds, cattle, serpents, gandharvas and demons — to that Vishnu, whose body is the three worlds, I bow.

Of peaceful form, resting on the serpent, lotus-navelled, Lord of the gods; support of the universe, vast as the sky, cloud-hued, beautiful of limb; beloved of Lakshmi, lotus-eyed, reached through the meditation of yogis' hearts — I salute Vishnu, remover of the fear of worldly existence, the one Lord of all worlds.

Dark as a rain cloud, robed in yellow silk, bearing the Shrivatsa mark, his body radiant with the Kaustubha gem, full of merit, with eyes wide as lotus petals — I salute Vishnu, the one Lord of all worlds.

Sa-Shankha-Chakram Sa-Kireeta-Kundalam Sa-Peeta-Vastram Sarasee-Ruhekshanam.Sahaara-Vakshah-Sthala-Shobhi-Kaustubham Namaami Vishnum Shirasaa Chaturbhujam.

With conch and discus, with crown and earrings, in yellow raiment, with lotus eyes, his chest graced by garlands and the shining Kaustubha — I bow my head to the four-armed Vishnu.

In the shade of the Parijata tree, seated upon a golden throne, dark as a rain cloud, wide-eyed and adorned; moon-faced, four-armed, his chest marked with the Shrivatsa; accompanied by Rukmini and Satyabhama — in that Krishna I take refuge.

The Vishnu Sahasranamam is a hymn of one thousand names of Lord Vishnu. It appears in the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata, where Bhishma lying on the bed of arrows answers Yudhishthira's question: "Who is the one refuge of all beings, and by chanting what does a person become free?" Bhishma's answer is this hymn. It is one of the most widely chanted stotras in the Hindu tradition, and Adi Shankaracharya's commentary on it is among his best-known works.

"Sahasranama" means a thousand names. Each name is not merely a label but a description of an attribute Vishwam (he who is the universe), Bhootakrit (maker of beings), Achyuta (he who never falls from his nature), Sharanam (the refuge), Bhayanashana (destroyer of fear).
